Aeration brings life to otherwise stagnant bodies
of water. It provides for the development of good bacteria that will break
down all of the dead organic material that has fallen into your pond over the
years. It generates water movement that allows toxic gases to escape from
the bottom of the pond. More than likely though if you are on this page
you are already sold on the benefits of aeration; in which I am also a firm
believer. Chemicals are only a temporary solution to long term
problem.
Aeration is a
necessary step on the path to creating a cleaner healthier pond. That
said, it is not the be-all end-all. When I started selling these windmills
I expected them to be a silver bullet in the battle against algae, filthy ponds,
sulphur smells, and pond muck, but have since learned that 20 years worth of
stagnant water, decomposing bullrushes, nutrient overload, etc. does not go away
over one night, month, or even one year. Yet within that first year life
does return to the pond, (minnows especially). All ponds are different and
the conditions in my pond are going to be very different from yours. How
you care for your pond in an ongoing manner is what is really going to impact
your own results. Here the snow melt brings in lots of fertilizer runoff
from the farmer's field that surrounds our property and the water that comes in
off the dark earth is very red-ish, so my water clarity isn't the best. I
plan on bringing in plants that filter and clarify the water, and I will work on
minimizing the plant material that continues to fall into the pond, starting
with the bullrushes that have taken over the water's edge. Your pond my
have a spring that replenishes the water or a sandy bottom that encourages
natural water filtration.
This
is my third year in business and on our pond we have crayfish (crawdads),
minnows, ducks, dragonflies, snails, and the little paddling water bugs.
Aeration was the first step and I am very glad I took it.
